Dogdyke Pumping Station

Museum | Lincoln | England | United Kingdom

The Dogdyke Pumping Station in Lincolnshire, UK, is a historic landmark specializing in the development and operation of steam engines for draining land. The station was originally commissioned in 1856 and was a crucial part of the agricultural drainage system in the region. It used a steam pump to power the "Scoop Wheel" mechanism, removing water from the land and enabling agricultural use in an otherwise wet area.

Of particular note is the still-functioning Bradley and Craven steam engine, a piece of special historical value. Visitors can experience the steam engine in action, a rare event that brings the industrial engineering of the 19th century to life. The museum not only provides insight into the history of this technology, but also into the social and economic impacts of drainage in the region.

The station is run by volunteers who maintain and operate the machinery, and they regularly host events that bring history to life. Here, visitors can learn about the impressive technology and the historical circumstances under which it was developed. The Dogdyke Pumping Station Museum is therefore a significant example of industrial engineering and a fascinating place for anyone interested in the history of agricultural drainage.

Great to see the original steam engine and the replacement diesel engine running. A lot of effort has been made by the volunteers that run the pumping station to make it a great place to visit.

Very Lincolnshire! Lindy Hop dancing on the grass, military vehicles display, vintage vehicles, refreshments with no charge just a donation (best Victoria sponge ever). This was an "event" day so don't expect this every time you go! Without the added entertainment this is still a great place to visit. Please support the volunteers who keep it running.

An incredibly well preserved piece of heritage. The Open Days are a must, with volunteers who are extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Everything is free - including parking, teas and cakes - but generous donations, necessary to support the charity that is responsible for the site, are encouraged and welcomed.

Well preserved and well kept historic pumping station. All the volunteers were super friendly and approachable plus had fantastic knowledge of the history and workings of the pump. Brilliant little museum alongside to give a bit more history of the local area and how the area has evolved. I can also recommend the little cafe as the tea and ginger cake were excellent !

A great museum and good to hear and smell the steam engine as it's in operation. There's a small little exhibition as well that tells the story of the families that operates the pump and of how it all happens. Great to go and see.

A fantastic little museum to visit. The steam beam engine and heavy oil engines were both running when we were there, and the volunteers are friendly and knowledgeable.

Its a hidden gem if you like history and a sense of what we owe to the determination and muscles of an earlier generation! Big landscape, big skies and water all around: pumped and moved by diesel and genuine steam engines. Very friendly, helpful and relaxed volunteers.. and nice cake!
